The president of Brazil’s PT (Workers Party) Gleisi Hoffman on Thursday described Mauricio Macri as “shameless”, criticising the Argentine president’s comments on Venezuela during a trip to Brazil.
“This president Macri is a joke. Argentina is falling apart. Serious economic crisis, rising inflation, rising poverty, very high unemployment, the closure of businesses and even looting in supermarkets. And he comes to talk badly about Venezuela. He is very shameless”, Hoffman wrote on Twitter.
Hoffman is a senator for Paraná province and a leading advocate for jailed former president, Luis Inacio da Silva, or Lula.
Macri met Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro in Brasilia on Wednesday. Among their talking points was the crisis in Venezuela, a country whose regime they labelled “a dictatorship”.
They also emphasized the need to “modernise” the Mercosur, the South American trade bloc for which Macri is serving as pro tempore president.
Brazil’s future within Mercosur has been uncertain since far-right Bolsonaro took control of the country on January 1.
Lula has been jailed since April 2018. At the time, polls suggested the former president was a shoe-in for the presidency. He and his supporters claim his jailing on corruption charges in part of a broader conspiracy against left-wing movements in the region.
