Some 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in northern Argentina following heavy rains in neighbouring Bolivia.

“The (Pilcomayo) river started to drop yesterday and today it has continued dropping all day. There is so much water”, Salta Governor Juan Manual Urtubey said.

Evacuation centres have been set up across the northern provinces to help families who have been affected by the emergency.

“Slowly but surely we will get back to normal, but now comes the hardest part”, Urtubey told TN.

“It’s a paradox to say that they lost everything but at the same time they lost nothing because they have nothing”, he added, referring to the day-to-day poverty experienced by people living in the affected villages in the Rivadavia area of Salta province.

The Pilcomayo river has reached a record 7.28 metres with the flooding. Other rivers including the Bermejo, Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay have also seen dramatic increases in water levels, affecting neighbouring countries Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil.
