An 18-year-old La Rioja provincial Police cadet’s death during training has prompted debate about training practices in the security forces.

Emanuel Garay died Sunday after a six-day fight for survival in a La Rioja hospital where he was suffering “serious acute dehydration and kidney failure”, according to an autopsy.

Five of Garay’s superiors —  cadets in their second and third years  are being investigated over the training session on Monday February 5 that is believed to have prompted the 18-year-old’s collapse and subsequent hospitalisation. Three senior officers are also being investigated.

The province’s general prosecutor claims the death occurred in “an adverse situation” given the high temperatures and the “disproportionate psychical demand” placed on cadets whom were “denied liquids to rehydrate”.

“They (the cadets) were forced to cover their hands with clothing because they could not tolerate the heat emanating from the ground”, the prosecution added.

Eleven cadets were hospitalised following the training sessions and most are recovering well, the prosecutions told local reporters.

Garay’s family has denounced the situation as torture and pointed the finger at the La Rioja province's highest authorities.
