Teachers in Buenos Aires province will today set up a protest camp near Government House in La Plata.

Unions representing the province's teachers are also expected to announce today a strike and protest march to be held on April 5.

The camp is the latest escalation of tensions between unions and the government of Maria Eugenia Vidal.

Teachers will join public servants, and hospital and judiciary workers, at San Martín Square in the provincial capital to demand “greater budget allocations for health, education, the judiciary, and children”.

Governor Vidal and her economic team have refused to offer teachers a wage hike greater than the 15-percent target ordered by President Mauricio Macri’s national government.

Teachers want wages to increase by 20 percent in 2018, in line with private inflation estimates for this year. While Vidal's team has offered a review of wages in October, teachers unions are demanding the inclusion of a trigger clause.

Unions in a number of jurisdictions have sealed deals with their respective governments. Most have agreed to around 15 percent.

After weeks of tensions, Buenos Aires City’s teachers are willing to accept 15 percent, La Nación reported this weekend.
